Giants Begin Four-Game Series In Bakersfield Tonight
The San Jose Giants open a four-game series against the Bakersfield Blaze this evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Jordan Johnson is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants tonight. Johnson has won his last two starts combining for 13 innings pitched with four earned runs allowed and 12 strikeouts. The right-hander leads the San Jose staff with 90 strikeouts this season. The Giants are 8–8 against Bakersfield this year.

Lost 2 Of 3 To JetHawks
The Giants opened their road trip by dropping two out of three games to the host Lancaster JetHawks in a series that concluded yesterday. San Jose began the series with a 10–6 win on Friday before suffering back-to-back losses of 16–2 on Saturday and 9–4 last night. The Giants allowed a total of 31 runs during the three games. San Jose has not won a series at The Hangar since sweeping a four-game set from August 11–14, 2011.

League Record Streak
The Giants (61–59) are looking to extend their California League record streak of consecutive winning seasons to 13. San Jose last had a losing season in 2003. The Giants need to post at least a 10–10 record over their final 20 games to finish above .500. All 20 of San Jose’s remaining games will be played against teams with a winning record, 10 of which will come versus Bakersfield.

Back At Sam Lynn
The current matchup against Bakersfield serves as San Jose’s second of three visits to Sam Lynn Ballpark this month. The Giants won two out of three games versus the Blaze from August 1–3. San Jose will return to Bakersfield for another three-game set starting on August 23. Beginning tonight, seven out of the Giants’ next 10 games will be played in Bakersfield. San Jose is 5–1 at Sam Lynn Ballpark this season.

Road Woes
The Giants are only 8–17 (.320) on the road in the second half — the second-worst road record in the league since the All-Star break (Inland Empire 5–16, .238). San Jose’s only road series win this half came during their most recent trip to Bakersfield (August 1–3). The Giants have a 5.10 team ERA on the road this year compared to 3.71 at home.

Davis Dingers
Dylan Davis has hit three home runs in his last four games. He became the first San Jose player to homer in three straight contests when he accomplished the feat last Thursday through Saturday. Davis has 12 home runs in 44 games with the Giants this season (.291 AVG). He’s averaging one home run every 14.7 at-bats with San Jose. Davis’ 20 home runs this season (Augusta + San Jose) leads the San Francisco Giants minor league system.

Standings Update
The Giants (22–28) are currently tied for third in the second half North Division race — six games behind Bakersfield (28–22) for the top spot. If the season ended today, San Jose would garner the #3 seed in the North Division as the Wild Card team (12 games ahead of Stockton). The Giants have made the playoffs in 11 out of the last 12 years (2004–2013, 2015).

Arenado Hitting Streak At 11 Games
Jonah Arenado brings an 11-game hitting streak into tonight’s contest. Arenado is batting .340 (16-for-47) during the hit streak with five doubles, two home runs and nine RBI’s. He’s homered in each of his last two games. The current hit streak matches the longest by a Giants player this season. Ronnie Jebavy hit safely in 11 straight games from June 5–17 while Arenado also had an 11-game hit streak earlier this year (June 9–19).

Pitching Struggles
San Jose has a 5.40 team ERA since the beginning of July — ninth in the California League. Only Inland Empire has a higher ERA at 5.45. The Giants have given up 46 home runs in 43 games since the start of July. San Jose had a 3.84 ERA over the first three months of the season (April-June). The Giants’ 6.05 ERA in August is last in the league (6–7 record).

Opponent Notes: Bakersfield Blaze
The Bakersfield Blaze, an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, are leading the second half North Division race with a 28–22 record — four games ahead of Visalia. Bakersfield swept three games from visiting Lake Elsinore in their most recent series. The Blaze lead the league in ERA (3.71) and are fourth in runs scored (5.1 per game). Bakersfield is 28–32 at home this season compared to a league-best 37–23 on the road.
